Matthew P. Smeltzer, PhD, MStat, is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and University Research Professor at the University of Memphis School of Public Health. His research includes clinical outcomes, early detection, implementation science, and disease surveillance in lung cancer and sickle cell disease. He is the quantitative lead for the Detecting Early Lung Cancer (DELUGE) in the Mississippi Delta and Mid-South Quality of Surgical Resection (MS-QSR) lung cancer cohorts.
Dr. Smeltzer is deputy chair of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) Communications Committee and a 2019 Fellow of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Training Institute for Dissemination and Implementation Research in Cancer. He has more than 125 publications, with a current focus in staging, early detection, and quality of care for lung cancer. His work is currently funded by the NCI, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
